I believe that one of the hardest parts of this whole experience was telling our children! We still didn't know many details and didn't want them to associate my cancer with my dad's. Shaun and I prayed that we would say the right thing and that we would be strong enough to let them know that everything would be o.k. Many tears were shed that night as we sat them down and listened to their concerns and questions. They are amazingly tough kids and we knew that we were going to be blessed and comforted throughout the next several months. My whole life revolves around Shaun and my children and my love and concern for them has never been so strong.

Thursday, January 28th--Meeting with Dr. Porretta (General Surgeon)

Shortly after I heard the news, I called Shaun and told him that he needed to come straight to the hospital. He quickly came over, met Dr. Nichols and found out right away. He was as schocked as I was, but continued to stay calm and positive and started asking many questions. I was comforted to see Liz (the P.A. that I used to see) knock on the door, give me the biggest hug ever and sat and cried with us!! She also suggested that I see Dr. Porretta right away and went straight to work setting up an appt. for the next day!! What a blessing!! She was amazing and so helpful!! I began to feel so much gratitude for knowing such wonderful Dr.'s that were so skilled and cared so much!! After an emotional and shocking day, we packed up and decided not to tell the kids until after we met with Dr. Porretta!! I kept thinking...how could we tell the kids, our family, my mom, Jim and Katie, Kev and Marce., Nat and Matt??? How were we possibly going to "break the news?" The only thing I could do was pray. I have never prayed so hard in my life. My world as I knew it would never be the same and somehow I had to work up the courage to face this trial more so than any other trial I had ever been through. Shaun and I prayed together that night that we would be comforted; that I would be o.k., that my family would be strong. I have never felt such emotions before!! I was nervous and anxious to meet with Dr. Porretta. Luckily she has an office at Jordan Valley where we checked in and only waited for a few minutes before she came in and introduced herself. She was very sweet (just as everybody had described) and had a calmness and peace about her that made me feel very comforted. She examined me, looked at my mammogram, and said that she wanted to take an ultrasound and another biopsy of my lymph nodes. She discovered that 1 - 2 of the lymph nodes were cancerous as well. I immediately paniced and started crying some more. She assured us that this was fairly common and tried to explain what would happen next!! I kept praying!! After spending one and half hours with her, Shaun and I felt so overwhelmed that I don't think we remembered anything she said. She quickly set up a bone scan (to make sure the cancer had not metastasized or spread to other parts of my body), a chest M.R.I. (to check my left breast), several blood tests, an appt. with Dr. Beck (the oncologist/cancer specialist), and a genetic test!! WHAT A WHIRLWIND!! I was grateful that she didn't waste any time and that she wanted to get started right away!! Again, the only thing I could do was pray!!!

These may probably seem like long, boring entries, but this is my journal and the only way that I will be able to remember all of these crazy details of the past three and half months. Please bear with me, skip parts that are drawn-out and boring, and most importantly, please continue to pray for me and my family!!

January 27, 2010---A Day in my life that will change me forever!!

Wed., Jan. 13th started off as any normal busy day!! Braden and Sydney were off-track and started art lessons. They were excited to go and continue working on their paintings and craft projects and we were also looking forward to meeting Shaun and The Halling's for lunch to visit and let the kids play. While I was on my way to pick them up, I noticed a very strange pain in my right breast. It wasn't terribly painful, but happened to shoot up the side of my chest every time I took a deep breath and just didn't seem right. We got to Carl's Jr. where I told Kerrian about this pain and she urged me to call Dr. Langer just to make sure that everything was o.k. I told her that it would probably go away and that I wasn't going to worry about it. Later that afternoon, we stopped to visit Grandma, and the pain was still persistent and just wasn't going away. I decided to call schedule an appt. Jen (Dr. Langer's nurse) said that the P.A. could see me on Friday, Jan. 15th. I told Shaun that I was a little worried and couldn't imagine what it could be. He assured me that it was probably nothing and that he was glad I was going to the Dr. Two days, later I had a thorough exam, and Bree, the P.A., told me that she could feel a small lump, but assured me that she didn't think it was anything to worry about, and scheduled a mammogram for the following Friday, Jan. 22nd. As crazy as it is, the pain went away and I went on with my week not really thinking about it and went in for my very first mammogram. I only waited for a few minutes before a darling tech. came back to get me. She was funny, pleasant, and made me forget why I was there. She finished the test and said that she would come back to get me if she needed more pictures. Sure enough, they wanted more pictures and said they would like to get an ultrasound. She introduced me to Melanie, the ultrasound technician, and we quickly became friends as we started talking about our parents and the hardships that we have both gone through in the past year. I felt a close connection to her and was grateful for her sweetness. After what seemed like an eternity, she brought another tech. in and then the radiologist!! He explained to me that he saw some suspicious lumps and wanted me to have a biopsy right away. I immediately broke down and felt very nervous and scared at this point and really didn't know what to think. Melanie called Shaun, and he quickly came right over. He has such a way of making everything all better. I love that boy more than he could ever imagine. He was SO incredibly positive and continued to assure me that everything was going to be all right. After a 30 minute procedure, they sent us on our way and told us that the results should be back by Tuesday. The weekend dragged on forever and we tried to stay positive and focused on the fact that they were just being precautious and that everything would come back normal. I called Mon...no results, I called Tuesday and talked to Jen. (Dr. Langer's nurse) and she said still no results. She explained to me that since they were off on Wed. that I should call and Bree's nurse would be able to tell me if they were in yet. I continued to call on Wed., feeling very frustrated that they still had nothing. I went to lunch with my friends and tried to enjoy our time together and not think about it. I called on my way home...still nothing. By 4:00, I just couldn't take it anymore. I called radiology and Melanie told me that the results had been sent up to Bree's office earlier on that afternoon. I tried calling and received their voicemail. I knew that I couldn't wait for one more night and decided to load up the baby and drive over to their office and a find a Dr. to tell me the results. I walked in, told the receptionist my name and she immediately took me right back and introduced to Dr. Nichols. For some reason, I just didn't have a good feeling and just knew that he wasn't there to deliver good news. He asked me to tell him what had been going on the past few days and proceeded to tell me that the biopsy had revealed that I had breast cancer. I couldn't believe it!!! How could this be? We were still mourning the loss of my sweet dad and I just felt like our family couldn't endure any more trials. The only thing I remember is breaking down and feeling completely numb with shock. He didn't have many details and told me that it was the "good" kind (whatever that means!!) to have and suggested that I see a General Surgeon by the name of Jane Porretta as soon as possible. So here's where my "journey" begins........

HAPPY NEW YEAR!! We rang in the New Year with some of our best friends...The Simmon's and The Halling's!! We had a blast playing games, eating lots of yummy food, and just hangin' out!! The kids ended off the evening by running around the circle screaming, yelling, and banging toy instruments together!! Thanks guys for celebrating New Year's Eve with us!! We had a blast!! On New Year's Day, I turned to Shaun and said, "This is going to be a GREAT year.....free of worries, trials, and hardships!!" Oh boy, little did I know what was in store for our family.

It's hard to believe that it's been over a year since I have posted on my blog, and it's even harder to believe that it's been over a year since my dear, sweet dad was diagnosed with pancreas cancer. As many of you know, he lost his courageous battle on April 17th, 2009 and words cannot express how much I miss my dad, and how my heart aches for him to be with our family every day. It has been a year of extremely difficult "firsts" as we have tried to slowly trudge through the holidays, camping trips, family reunions, birthdays, sporting events, tumbling recitals, etc., etc. There are some days that I still don't believe it, and wait for him to walk through the door with one of his sarcastic, funny comments. I am forever grateful for the love, strength and neverending support that my dad gave to me throughout the years!! He is my shining hero and I love him now more than ever!! Thank you Dad for being the very best POPS in this whole world!! We will continue to honor and love you forever and always!!

These past two weeks have been the most difficult days of my life, and it's been a while since I have blogged, and have been trying to think of the right words to say for this entry. About six years ago, my dad was diagnosed with diabetes and has always been able to control it with pills, with the exception of the past couple of months. Right after Christmas he got sick a couple of times and we just thought it was the stomach flu, and maybe because his sugar levels kept going up. On Monday, February 9th, he woke up extremely jaundice and yellow, and my mom rushed him to the Dr. Two days later they did a catscan, and discovered that the reason he was so jaundice is because he has a tumor the size of a tennis ball that is blocking his bile ducts and not allowing the bile to drain. The Dr. called my parents and told them that he needed to see them right away. He was diagnosed with pancreas cancer, and said that he wanted my dad to see an oncologist (cancer specialist) immediately. On Friday, the 13th, me, my mom, my dad, and Kevin went to "Utah Cancer Specialists" where we met with the most AMAZING Dr. that I have ever met. He was encouraging, fun, and optimistic that a surgeon might be able to remove the tumor and start Chemotherapy. It's been an extremely exhausting and overwhelming process meeting with G.I. Dr.'s, radiologists, surgeons, and all sorts of other specialists. He was hospitalized over the weekend after a procedure to put an external drain in to start helping with his jaundice. He is home now and feeling pretty good. He has been extremely positive and continues to comfort us with his amazing attitude. We are trying desperately to bring his sugar levels down so that the radiologists can perform a "petscan" test, which will show if there is cancer anywhere else. The catscan shows that the cancer has spread into his large blood vessels near his pancreas. Dr. Frame (oncologist) is going to start the Chemotherapy treatments on Friday in hopes that it will shrink the tumor, and possibly do surgery in three months. As my family continues to be faced with these trials, we continue to feel the love of our Heavenly Father, and now more than ever are relying upon Him for a miracle. We have to have faith that the Lord will bless us and trust that we are strong enough to make it through this. It seems like I am always asking for everybody to pray for us, but am hoping once again that it's o.k. to ask!! We love you all and feel so blessed to be surrounded by such loving, caring, and supportive friends and family. I will continue to keep you posted and have even thought of creating a seperate blog just to show his progress. Thanks again!!

Marshall - 2 mos. old

As many of you know, Marshall has been home now for over a week and is doing GREAT!! He is on the highest dose of medication that the Dr.'s have ever seen, but they feel like as long as it is helping him they will continue to keep him on it. He continues to grow and LOVES his food. I had the wonderful opportunity of spending the day with him and Kevin and Marcy yesterday and had a total blast. He is so special and has such a beautiful spirit about him. He is a very happy and content baby and always has a smile on his face. I just sat and held him the whole time and didn't want to let him go. I can't wait for he and Caleb to become best little buddies and play and laugh together. We are so grateful for his ongoing progress and for the love that he has brought to our family. We love you baby!!

It's very clear me to now why Kauai is called one of the most beautiful places to visit!! It was so lush and green everywhere we went. We had a wonderful time, and enjoyed spending time with our SWEET little children!! (Accept for when they were fighting, arguing, teasing, complaining because we were going to see another waterfall, mad that they HAD to go back to the beach, sick of riding in the car, trying to get each other into trouble, tattling, the list goes on and on!!) The beautiful sunshine and 82 degree weather helped take all of the craziness away!!

So, we are off to Kauai!! Yes, my children are spoiled, but I do have to say that it helps that the trip is covered by "frequent flier miles" and "Hilton points". We are SOOOOOO excited and can't wait to share all of our pics. and adventures!! Wish me luck....I've never traveled with a one-year old before!! (Kerrian, I miss you and DESPERATELY and need your advice!!) Here goes!! ALOHA!!

Marshall Update!!

Marshall has made amazing progress over the past two days. It has been quite a tough road for this little guy but he continues to show us just how tough he really is. The wheeziness that he has been experiencing been a concern to the doctors, but due to the many S.V.T. episodes that he was having they were hesitant to scope his little throat. So, finally yesterday morning the E.N.T. team was able to go in and see that 90% of his airway was being blocked by old scar tissue from the ventilator. Miraculously he has been breathing through a space the size of a pin hole. The Dr. was shocked, and said that it was completely unexpected. They were able to fix most of the blockage, and hoping for the rest of the swelling to go down. He is sooooo beautiful and doing GREAT!! We are so blessed and want to thank you again for your thoughts and prayers!! It truly is the reason why is healing so well!! We love you all!

Marshall was admitted to the hospital on Monday and was given additional medication to help keep his heartbeat normal. At 2:00 a.m. this morning, he went back into S.V.T. and had to be re-admitted into the P.I.C.U. (Pediatric Intensive Care Unit). The Dr.'s started one more medication and are hoping this will help. We are so grateful for all of your love and support and cannot tell you how much your thoughts, prayers, and concern mean to our family. We will keep you posted!!

For all of my dear, sweet family and friends reading this, I just wanted to give you a quick update on baby Marshall. He has had a great week home with the exception of a little wheeziness. On Friday, he had a check-up, and the Dr. said that he was probably experiencing some irritation due to the ventilator, but that his lungs were clear, and all was well. Throughout the weekend, Kev. and Marc. continued to monitor his breathing and decided to take him to the Dr. this morning. Unfortunately, his heart had gone back into S.V.T. (which means that it was beating above normal). They are on their way back up to Primary's E.R. right as we speak, to see if he has to be re-admitted. We are so grateful for all of the prayers that have been given on his behalf and ask that you will continue to pray for baby Marshall, Kevin, and Marcy. We know that their is great power in prayer, and we thank you all for continuing to pray for their family.

Happy New Year to all of you!! I hope that you all had a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. With the business of the holiday season, my blog has been severely neglected, and I haven't been very dilligent in posting our latest happenings, so I decided that I would try to catch up and back up just a little bit. Bear with me it's been a crazy past couple of mos.

Christmas was so special this year with our dear, sweet little Caleb, and our other children, but difficult all at the same time. I became very sick with the stomach flu on the 23rd of Dec., and was down in bed through Christmas Eve night. I sat and cried as I watched my little family drive off to G-ma and G-pa's without me. Fortunately, I started feeling better that night and woke up Christmas morning to lots of fun and tons of excitement! We couldn't believe when we looked outside that a major blizzard had truly given us a white Christmas. I was devastated knowing that my mom and dad wouldn't be able to drive in such dangerous, snowy weather, from Grantsville. I called my mom and had to hold back the tears (AGAIN) as I knew this would be the first Christmas that I wouldn't be spending with my parents or the rest of my family as well. I tried to stay positive, and focus on my own little family. Then, Shaun looked at me and said he felt like he was going to throw up.....one right after the other, it came....Austin, then Braden, and on and on!! I felt like Cinderella, scrubbing, washing, bleaching, all on Christmas Day. Syd. and I finally sat down and played a quick game and ate our Christmas Dinner all by ourselves. By the end of the night, I was exhausted and wanted everybody to just get better really fast. Then at 2:00 A.M., poor little Syd. came upstairs and had thrown up all over her bedroom. She was sick throughout the rest of the night, and for the next day. MERRY CHRISTMAS!! We had to wait for several days before we could celebrate with our family's just because we didn't want to pass germs. When we were finally able to go out to Grantsville, and celebrate with my family, my camera batteries were dead, and I don't even have ONE pic. of my wonderful parents or family with my kids. So sad!! (For those of you that know me, I never leave home without a camera, and feel completely lost when my batteries die!!). Well, everybody's better and we are excited to embark on a new year and carry on with all of the many adventures that are out there waiting for us!!

KEVIN, MARCY, AND BABY MARSHALL

On Dec. 18th, Marshall went in for his routine 2-week check-up where his pediatrician became very concerned about his heartbeat. It was supposed to be beating between 150 -200 bpm, and was beating at 250 bpm. He sent them to the Primary Children's ER, and was quickly seen by a cardiologist, and administered medication to bring his heartbeat down. Unfortunately, the med. did not work and he was admitted into the P.I.C.U. the following morning. It was unimaginable to me that my own brother and his dear, sweet wife were going through the VERY same experience that Shaun and I had just gone through one year prior. I couldn't believe it, and was shocked and saddened all at the same time. The days that followed were extremely difficult, and it seemed like none of the medications were working to bring his little heartbeat down. Miraculously, after their ward and our family fast and many prayers and priesthood blessings, he started to respond to the medication that he was given and was just barely released from the hosp. two days ago. He truly is a miracle, and a very special baby. We love them so very much, and want to thank all of you for your concern, thoughts, and prayers. It has meant the world to Kevin and Marcy and to our family.

OUR VERY SPECIAL SERVICE PROJECT!

While Caleb was in the hospital during Christmas last year, we felt so blessed and loved by complete strangers who had donated beautiful homemade quilts, blankets, bibs, burpcloths, special stuffed animals, and so many other generous gifts. Shaun and I had discussed that we wanted to do something special to give back to those parents who would be spending their holidays in the hosp. this year. We sat down with the kids during Family Home Evening, and talked about how much these gifts meant to us, and asked if they could donate some money, and ideas for what our family could do for these babies. We were so proud of them when they each willingly gave $5 of their own money. We decided to buy 44 (that's how many NICU cribs there are) stuffed giraffes and penguins with a special note attached. It was truly a beautiful experience, and a tradition that we will hopefull carry on for years to come.

Syd. and I had the great privlege of delivering these stuffed animals and the darling stockings that our "Activity Days" group designed and created for the NICU babies as well. (Thanks Em. for all of your help and supporting me in this big, crazy project! I love you!)

Syd. LOVES dressing Caleb up in anything that she can find. You name it--her overgrown, huge sweatshirts, hats, scarves, the list goes on and on!!

Friends Christmas Party - I think we need to work on our "funny faces." (It was getting late) I miss these beautiful girls so much, and LOVE when I get to spend time with them. They are such wonderful friends, and are such amazing examples to me!! I love you girls!! (We missed you Angie and Teri, and can't wait to plan our next G.N.O.) Happy 14th anniversary to my beautiful Shaun!! I feel SO blessed to be married to my very best friend. Thanks for always making me feel so special, cheering me up when I'm feeling down, always giving me GREAT advice, and for being the BEST husband and father in the world. I love you more than words can say!! XOXO
Caleb's 1st official haircut -- This little guy is such an angel baby. He just sat there so still, and was easily entertained with squirt bottles and combs. Let's just hope he stays that way, RIGHT??!!

Happy 6th Birthday Braden!! Braden brings so much love and joy to our family. He is quite the little jokester, and rarely cracks a smile when he's trying to be funny. He LOVES spending time with his buddies, and most especially, his cousin Dallin!!

Thanksgiving 2008 - Every year we trade off with our families and this year we went to the Koos family. We had a wonderful dinner, and lots of fun with all of Shaun's cousins. We sure did miss the Tullis'-my kids were counting down the hours until they got there.

Yes, we were some of the crazy girls that went to the midnight showing of "Twilight!" We had a total blast, and couldn't believe all of the devoted fans all decked out for the night!

Priesthood Preview -- It's hard to believe that Austin will be 12 in June, and will be ready to hold the Aaronic priesthood. Shaun did a great job giving a talk on the importance of holding the priesthood. I am so grateful for the gospel in our lives. We are so proud of Austin, and love him so very much.

Austin's final game - Unfortunately, Austin's team didn't make it to the play-off's this year, but had a great time trying to get there. Can't wait until next football season!! Go Bingham!

Happy Birthday our special miracle baby!!

My heart is full of gratitude, love, and emotion as we have celebrated Caleb's birthday today. I can't help but think of the night he was born when he wasn't breathing on his own and was taken to the nursery so quickly for additional support. Minutes after that, a nurse came down to tell me that they were going to life-flight him to Primary Children's Hospital. It was the hardest thing that I have ever been through. The days that followed Caleb's birth were extremely difficult for Shaun and me and our entire family. Amazingly enough, he was able to come home in three and a half weeks time without oxygen, feeding tubes, or any other medication. He is strong and healthy and thriving in every way. He walks around the furniture, and crawls speedy fast. He loves to babble and even says a few little words, like "da da" and "papa" for Grandpa. He is such a content, happy baby and rarely ever cries. He has brought so much love and joy into our lives, and has made our family complete. Every day when I look into those big, beautiful blue eyes, I am reminded of the grace of God, and how blessed we really are. He truly is a miracle. Happy Birthday my special baby!! We love you more than words can say!!

Beautiful baby Marshall Robert Upp was born on Dec. 3rd @6:15 P.M. weighing in at 8 lbs. 4 oz., and 20" long. Congratulations to Kevin and Marcy. We are so happy for them, and overjoyed that this little bundle of joy has finally arrived. They are already such AMAZING parents, and love this little baby so very much. I may be a little biased, but I truly think that he is one of the cutest babies that I have ever seen. Kevin and I have always been so close that I feel such a special bond with this little guy and just wanted to sit and hold him all day long!! I can't wait until he and Caleb get a little older and become best little buddies. Welcome to the family special baby! We love you!!

It's hard to believe that a year ago at this time I was pregnant with this little bundle of joy!! How time flies when you're having fun. Caleb continues to amaze us with his many miraculous milestones each and every day!! Many of you know that we have a wonderful occupational therapist that comes to work with him once a week. She is always so positive, and says how happy she is with his ongoing progress!! I thank Heavenly Father every day for this special gift in my life!!

Gone are the days of ribbons and bows!!!

Every mother dreams of the day when she will have a beautiful little girl to dress up in fancy clothes, frilly dresses, and last but not least, ribbons and bows. Lucky for me, I was able to do all of the above for quite some time. It was almost like playing dress-up everytime I would buy her a new outfit just to see how darn cute she would look in it. And the shoes.....oh, the shoes! (Especially the boots in every color to match the outfits). Shortly after she was born, I even got a part-time job at "Baby Gap" just to keep her dressed in the latest and greatest styles!! Along with all of the fun clothes and accessories, she ALWAYS had a bow or ribbon in her hair of some sort. (Even when we went camping). She literally has HAD bows in her hair since the day she was born!! (you know those cute little ones that the nurse sticks in with KY, right after their first bath!!) Despite her change in styles and our difference of opinion in her clothes, I was still always able to sneak the ribbons and bows in.....up until that dreadful day last year when we were following our same morning ritual, and I went to tie that perfect bow, just as I had done so many times before, when she looked up at me and said in a very firm voice, "Mom, I am in second grade, and I don't want you to put those dumb bows in my hair anymore. I couldn't believe this was happening. I was devastated and thought I had at least another couple of years.....AT LEAST. I quickly told her that it was just part of getting ready for the day, and that she had to have the bows in, and acted as if it wasn't any big deal. Again, she looked up at me and said, "I said NO BOWS," and walked away. That was that, and ever since, I've been hanging onto the fact that MAYBE, just maybe one day she might let me put them in for church, a special occasion, Christmas, or just for fun. So, I guess it's time to depart with all of those ribbons and bows, and say, "So long for now.....it was quite a ride while it lasted!!" I LOVE YOU SYD!!

Halloween just wasn't the same around here this year as it has been in years past! Austin came to us a couple of days before Halloween and said that he and his buddies wanted to go "trick-or-treating" by themselves this year and didn't want any mom's or dad's going. At first we were a little hesitant, but after lots of begging, pleading, many "safety" lectures, MORE stranger/danger talks, and tears (from me, of course), we finally gave in and decided to let him go. After we agreed to let Austin go, Syd. thought that she should be able to do the same thing, so luckily, since our kids have such great friends, she went off on our own as well. So sad!!! One step closer to independence!!

I know I'm a little behind on updating my blog, but I too, like a lot of you love fall. Caramel apples, falling leaves, letting fresh air in through open windows, pumpkin bars, and last, but certainly not least, FOOTBALL!!

My beautiful princess, and my handsome prince charming!

Happy Birthday to Sydney and Shaun! I just had to post this picture!! Syd. really is "Daddy's princess." It's hard to believe that our little Sydney is growing up so very fast, and is already nine years old, and 2 months into 3rd Grade!! Oh, it's so sad to think that this is her last year in "single" digits!! (That means Shaun and I are getting REALLY old!!) Syd. brings so much love and joy to our family. She is very mature for her age, and has always acted much older than she really is. She is thoughtful, kind, and very affectionate. I love that she just comes up to me and gives me a hug (right out of the blue), and says, "I love you mom!" She LOVES her baby brother very much, and always makes him laugh. She always tells me how darling he is, and tells me to watch what he is doing. It melts my heart. She LOVES spending time with her friends, and feels completely lost if she doesn't have a friend over. She has an amazing ability to make new friends, and keep in touch. It means a lot to her to spend time with friends that she doesn't get to see that often, and makes an effort to always plan "playdates" and "late overs!" She is extremely creative and very artistic, and is always "designing" something or the other!! She LOVES tumbling, and is constantly doing cartwheels, walk-over's, back handsprings, back tucks, etc., etc.....She loves her family very much, and enjoys spending time with all of the Grandma's and Grandpa's and all of her sweet cousins. We feel so blessed to have her in our family. Happy Birthday Syd.!!

Happy Birthday to my amazing, wonderful, dear sweet Shaun!! I'm pretty sure that he has got to be the BEST husband and father in this whole world! I am so blessed to be married to my very best friend!! Thanks for ALWAYS making me laugh, and being my biggest "cheerleader!" Thanks for providing for our family and working so hard everyday to make sure that we have what we need. Thanks for always making me feel important. Thanks for always fixing EVERYTHING, and being the biggest handyman I know. Thanks for teaching our children the importance of the gospel, and being such an amazing example to them. G-pa "Pooper" and Syd. share the same birthday! It is so special to see the sweet bond that they share. It started all of those years ago when we were building our house, and lived with G-ma and G-pa! Syd. instantly became G-pa's best friend, and always wanted him to hold her, and play with her. Sometimes, G-pa was the only person she wanted. (To this day, there are times when he still is the only person she wants.) He is an amazing man, full of so much love for his family and his Grandchildren. He loves them all so much, and would do anything for them. Thank you, Grandpa for all of the many sleepovers, hikes, walks, advice, "special dates", movie nights, and the list goes and on and on! I may be a little bias, but I really think that I have the best family in the whole world. I feel so blessed to have such amazing aunts, uncles, and cousins that I can just "hang out" with and completely and totally be myself whenever we get together. Every year, I look forward to our annual camping trip where we stay up late sitting around the campfire, until all hours of the night, getting caught up on "you know who", laughing so hard it hurts, having relay races, tug-of-wars, tye-die t-shirts, having water fights, having beauty queen pageants every now and then, watching movies on the big screen (thanks Brian), eating more junk food than you can imagine, playing "family jeopordy", floating the river on tubes, roasting smores, and catching up on all the latest happenings. After months of begging and pleading with my children, I was finally able to take a few pictures after church on Sunday. Let's just say it was not as easy as it may appear to be.......40 min. later, sweat-stained clothes from the heat, squintie eyes from the sun, and a few tearful breakdowns, we were FINALLY able to get a a couple of frame-worthy photos.

After two weeks of try-outs, two gruelling weeks of practice, and one practice game, Austin finally had his first "official" game on Sat. against Highland. We are so proud of how well he played!! Happy Birthday Grandma!! We Love You!!

As many of you know, all of the grandchildren call Jim and Katie, Grandma and Grandpa "Pooper." Some of you may ask yourself where this strange, but endearing name came from. When Austin was just starting to to talk, he would always ask to go over to "Pooper's" (Jim and Katie's dog at the time), house and visit. We finally figured out that it wasn't really Pooper that he wanted to visit, but that he wanted to go over and see Grandma and Grandpa. The name has stuck for all of these years, through seven adorable grandkids. We love you very much Grandma, and cannot tell you how much we appreciate all that you do for our family. You truly are the BEST Grandma in the world. Thanks for always making us feel so special, and taking the time to be there for us. We also wanted to thank you for all of the memorable special holiday traditions; i.e. pumpkin carving, gingerbread houses, 4th of July at Murray Park, "special days" just because, and more sleepovers than you can ever imagine!! Thanks to Grandma and Grandpa for keeping their timeshare in Bear Lake. We have soooo much fun every year spending the week with my family--hanging out on the beach, playing cards, swimming, swimming, and more swimming, making lots of new friends, and of course, going to the the "Pickleville Playhouse" to catch a great theatrical performance.

SUMMER FUN!!!

(This is a post that I tried to update at the beginning of the month, but can you imagine that I got interrupted, and was never able to finish?? Hee, hee, hee!! So, after lots of teasing from my sweet friends, and darling cousins, I thought I better do a better job keeping my blog updated.)

I feel like these days, weeks, and months are flying by!! We have been EXTREMELY busy with baseball, all-stars, tumbling, swimming, etc.., etc.., etc... I have realized that this is my "time and season," and as crazy as it is, I am trying to soak it up, and loving every minute of it. That song by Belinda Carlisle, "Running just as fast as we can," continues to pop in my head, as I feel like that is all we do these days. Trying to get out the door by 8:45 A.M. for swimming lessons seems nearly impossible, baseball practice every day, games in between (in Bountiful), piano lessons, changing at least 20 diapers a day, refereeing all of those sibling arguements, bkfst., lunch, dinner, storytime, scripture study (what's that?), prayers, laundry, laundry, and more laundry!!! It's a crazy life, but our life!! (Sorry, I stole that line from Kate on "Jon and Kate plus eight--I love that show!!) So, here's a recap of our latest happenings.........

I LOVE this picture, and just wanted to share it with everybody. We just found out on Saturday that little Caleb has pneumonia (again), and another ear infection. Despite all of this, he never complains, and still always manages to have a smile on his face. Dr. Aizad put him on a strong antibiotc, and we are praying for a quick recovery!!

Miraculous Milestones

On Thursday, May 22nd, Caleb had his first "Neonatal Special Health Care Needs" follow-up visit. This clinic is for babies who are born premature, are on ECMO, or have other special needs. Caleb got to visit with four different specialists; Dr. Bybee-chief pediatrician, Dr. Thompson - pediatric neurologist, the physical therapist (oops...I forgot his name), a dietician (oops..forgot her name too), and a pediatric nurse. As we made are way around to each doctor, we continued to hear how amazing Caleb was doing, and how they couldn't believe that he was sick enough to be on ECMO. Each one of them said that he had mastered all of his milestones up to this point, and looked just as great as any other five month old baby. He weighed 18 lbs. 11 oz., and was off the charts in his height. They were a little worried about his blood pressure being too high, and told us to have Dr. Aizad continue to watch it in the future. By the end of the day, they all laughed and said the only thing that they were worried about is how spoiled he was, and how he was probably a little overloved! The doctors and nurses were so very sweet and pleasant, and made us feel so comfortable throughout the day. As we drove home, we were so happy with the amazing progress that little Caleb is making, and continued to feel so grateful to have this beautiful little spirit in our home. Thank you to all of the WONDERFUL doctors and nurses who never to cease to amaze us at Primary Children's Hospital.

Sunday, May 18th - Caleb's blessing

I cannot even begin to describe how strong the spirit was in our home during Caleb's blessing. I was overcome with emotion, as I reflected back upon the past 5 months, and the journey that we have taken to get to this joyous occasion. We were surrounded by our dear, sweet families, and Brother Tim Frank, a member of the Bishopric. Shaun gave him a beautiful blessing, and he didn't even make a peep. It was a very special and memorable day. Thanks to our families in sharing this beautfiul day with us.

Due to the fact that Caleb is such a chunk, we had to do a little improvising on his blessing outfit. I was planning on using Austin's, and discovered (way too late), that it was way too small, and wouldn't work. So, we decided to use this cute little linen button-up shirt and shorts, (a baby gift straight from Mexico, from one of the girls on Shaun's team). Thank goodness it fit perfect and even allowed a little breathing room. Whoosh!!

So, we finished the basement just in time for the baby to get here, and then we (o.k., mostly Shaun) decides that we should tear up the yard and start over. So, he took a day off work, rented a sod cutter, cut grass, had top soil, sand, fill dirt, and blocks for a retaining wall, delivered all in one day!! (Can you say ambitious, or crazy, one of the two??) The kids had lots of fun HELPING out with all of the many jobs that day.

us long for the beautiful tropic beaches.

What a little cutie!! All of this shoveling and work, and still is just as happy as ever. He has been wanting to do this for the past couple of years, and is very anxious to carry out the design that he drew up!! It will be lots of fun when it's done. You're all invited over for a pool party!!

Caleb is such a happy guy!! He is always full of smiles, and giggles at any given moment. We were in the car the other day, and Braden simply looked over at him, and said, "What are you doing in there?", and he started laughing. There is nothing like hearing that little baby giggle. It melts my heart. I want to record it and just listen to it over and over.

Field Trip to Hill Air Force Base

Austin was lucky enough to go to "Hill Air Force Base" for his field trip this year. As many of you know, Grandpa Koos works there, and took the morning off to show us around. Austin was so excited to spend time with him, and told all of his friends how cool it was that we were going to his work. Later that night, he mentioned how fun it was to be with Grandpa, and said how much fun he had with him. Thank you Jim, for being the best Grandpa in the world, and for taking time out of your busy day to spend with us. We love you!!

This was truly an extra special Mother's Day for me!! I thank Heavenly Father every day for my many, many blessings, most especially, my beautiful baby Caleb. I know I say this often, but my heart is so full of gratitude every day for all that I have. I am so grateful for my strong, healthy, energetic, vivacious children, and for the opportunity that I have to be their mother.

Mother's Day always makes me feel so grateful for my dear, sweet mom and for Katie, my wonderful mother-in-law. For those of you who may not know, my mom was in a severe car accident ten years ago, and was hurt very bad. She has made a miraculous recovery, and never ceases to amaze our family with her neverending zest for life. She is an amazing, giving, caring, and kind person, who blesses all of those who come in contact with her. Mother's Day brought upon a whole new meaning after my mom's accident, and I truly feel so blessed to have her in my life. She was such a strength to me during Caleb's birth, and I can't ever thank her enough for all that she does for me. I love you so much mom!

I am so grateful for Katie, and for the amazing example that she is to me! She has always treated me like her own daughter, and for that I am so thankful! She is such an amazing, sharing, sweet, and wonderful person who devotes her life to her children and grandchildren! She is always there for us, and does so much for our family. I love you Katie!

Yes, it's hard to believe that my sweet, little, "baby" brother just turned the big 30 on April 24th. (Now, that makes me feel really old!) His darling wife, Marcy, threw him the most amazing SURPRISE party ever. You should have seen the look on his face when he walked into the restaurant to see his whole family there singing "Happy Birthday!" to him. It was TONS of fun, and filled with a big surprise for us as well. Shortly after Kev opened his presents, he announced to us that Marcy would be starting a new job in Nov. Then he went onto to tell us that her new job was going to be a mom!! CONGRATULATIONS!! We are so happy for them, and cannot wait to see this beautiful baby due to be here on Dec. 4th!! Yea!! I can't wait to return all of the babysitting favors. We LOVE YOU GUYS SO MUCH!!

Caleb FINALLY got to spend time with little Brooklyn (my dear friend, Kerrian's little girl). He got to have a little play date with her, and spend time over at her house. He slept most of the time, but was very excited to see her, and had LOTS of fun on one of his first outings. We are still very cautious with this little guy. We were advised not to take him out to public places, until he's at least six months old.

This is one of my favorite pictures!! Shaun and I LOVE this baby so much, and truly feel so blessed to have this angel in our lives. I thank Heavenly Father every day for allowing us the opportunity to have this special gift. I feel overwhelmed with gratitude every time I look into his beautiful blue eyes. He is such a sweet, calm, and content baby. He never cries unless he is hungry, and even then it is usually only a small whimper. He is a miraculous boy, and continues to amaze us with his ongoing progression.

As you can see, Caleb wasn't too sure about the green beans!! He gagged and quivered after each bite, but continued eating until we were done feeding him. The kids had so much fun helping and watching him have his first taste of baby food.

Open wide! Caleb got to have his first taste of "real" food last night. (Green beans.....gotta love that baby food.) After his 4 month appt. on Tues., Dr. Aizad said that because he was SO big, we should only feed him low carb. veggies. Sorry buddy, it looks like peas and green beans are the only thing on the menu for now.

We even ran into a few neighbors that we told could look at him but couldn't touch! Caleb didn't make a peep, and had a wonderful time staring at all of the new scenery around him.

It is wonderful watching the older kids interact with him. They love to make him smile and try extra hard to get some giggles every now and then. Caleb is doing great, he continues to eat and grow and develop. He's up to 17 lbs. now!

He is such a happy good natured little baby. He is always smiling and is beginning to find his voice.

We are still advised to keep him in the house and out of public places for another few months. However recently we have been able to have a few family visitors over.

Caleb brings such joy to our lives, he truly is a little angel.

So it's been awhile since I've posted any recent pictures of Caleb. I can't believe he is already 8 weeks old. He's such a fun little baby. He's recovered from his RSV and we were able to qualify him for a series of RSV vacinations that should keep him protected from the virus throughout the rest of the season.

In addition to the RSV he also had a little ear infection and a slight case of pneumonia. He's also been back to the hospital for his EEG and his hearing test - he passed both with flying colors! It's been a rough couple of months for the little guy but he is doing amazingly well.

Caleb has now been home for 24 days and doing well. We would once again like to thank everyone for the continued thoughts and prayers. Although he is doing so well he has came down with RSV which has gave him some pretty nasty coughing fits and been a little bit scary for his parents. Due to the fight and determination in this little guy he has been able to avoid going back into the hospital and been able to stay at home. Other than the RSV he has done so well, he is such a good baby it seems as though the only time he cries is diaper changes, rub downs, bath time and when he is hungary. He continues to amaze us everyday and we know that alot of this is due to the strength of the number of people that care about this little guy. Thanks once again to each and every one of you.

One of the most enjoyable things when we were in the hospital was when Caleb would grab our finger and hold on tight. Even know he was out of it most of the time, it was a little sign that he knew we were there with him. It's still one of the things we enjoy the most about having him home.

Hello Everyone, we wanted to give a quick update on Caleb and post some new pictures. Caleb has been doing so well - it's hard to believe he is already a month old! The last 4 weeks have really flown by. Alicia and I keep saying how we hope the time passes quickly so we will be out of the cold and sickness and RSV season - but it almost goes by too quickly.

We also wanted to tell everyone how much we have appreciated the meals that have continually been brought in. You will never know how sincerely grateful we are for each you. Alicia and I say everyday how lucky and blessed we are to live in such a wonderful neighborhood with such wonderful family and friends. Thank you!

Sleeping Baby

Caleb has been home now for a few days and continues to do so well. He had his first checkup with the doctor earlier in the week and will continue to have follow up visits on a regular basis.

Here's a picture of him enjoying one of his favorite daytime activities. The only time we are able to get a glimpse of him with his eyes open is around 3:00 am. I believe he has his days and nights mixed up which isn't good for mom and dad.

The kids are really enjoying having a new little baby in the house and constantly fight over who gets to hold him. This is one of those rare moments during the day when Caleb is actually awake and looking at the camera - and we were actually lucky enough to get Austin to smile too!

In the short time since Caleb has been home, we've found out there are a few things he loves to do. Eating and sleeping are at the top of that list. He also loves being home with his brothers and sister that waited so long to see him.

We know that many of you are anxious to stop by and say hello. We appreciate that so much and can't wait for Caleb to meet all of our wonderful family and friends. However the doctors have told us that due to his "immune-compromised" condition, Caleb should not have visitors until after RSV season is over - for at least 3 months. We look forward to that day as another big milestone in his little life.

Welcome Home

We were finally able to bring Caleb home from the hospital on New Years Day. He made such great progress over the last week that he was able to to come home much earlier than expected.

Over the last few weeks we've had several doctors and nurses stop by to tell us how amazing he was doing. Many told us what a little miracle they thought he was. They were completely astonished that he was doing so well and going home already.

We are blessed and know that it was the thoughts and prayers of all our family and friends that helped him recover so quickly. We thank you for all your love and support and could not thank you enough.

We are simply amazed at the spirit and strength little Caleb has continually demonstrated. This morning around 5:30 a.m. Doctors and Nurses decided that it was time to remove Caleb's feeding tube along with his oxygen. All along the medical staff has said when it comes time to start feeding him you will have to be patient because sometimes it is challenging, however Caleb has grasped the concept quite well, so well that his mom was able to nurse him this morning. He continues to amaze everyone the progress he has made in such a short amount of time. It is amazing how much this little guy has already changed our lives, I guess it goes to show it does not matter who you are young or old you can impact peoples lives. We want to continue

Great Strides

A great day at the hospital today and lots of fun pictures of little Caleb.

We even caught a cute picture of him smiling.

Once again he continues to amaze us and his doctors with his INCREDIBLE progress.

He's been moved to a crib and has been eating very well. His nurse bumped his feeding up to 50 cc's of milk and he surprised her by drinking a full bottle - 80cc's! We hope to have his feeding tube removed real soon.

We also hope to have all of his IVs removed soon so he can start taking the remaining medicines orally. We still don't have a date on when we can expect to bring him home, but they are looking to schedule his MRI for next week which means we're one step closer. We're keeping our fingers crossed and hoping he does not have much longer than a couple more weeks.

Thanks once again for everyone's kind comments on the blog - they really help keep us going. We appreciate all your support and everything all of you have done for our family.

Caleb is doing so well. As you can see from the pictures Caleb has lost quite a few machines in the last couple of days. He is eating alot more than the Doctors or Nurses originally thought he would, and all of his tests continue to come back very positive and everyone is simply amazed at how well he is progressing. Once again to reiterate we know it is through faith and prayers that he is doing so well and for that we thank you all!

Caleb has made so many great steps over the last few days. From being weened off his ventilators and the Nitric gas and now eating from a bottle. His swelling has really gone down and now we can finally start to see his cute little face.

He's such a precious little baby. It's so fun to see him alert and looking around and recognize when his mom and dad are there.

Grandma and Grandpa got our Christmas present and were allowed to hold him this morning; he's doing good and opened his eyes for us. We love this little guy immensely. He has a little fluid in his lungs. Dr Yoder indicated this is not a concern, as he has a lot of fluid in his body and the body processes it out thru the lungs. He had a little cough and a slight wheeze. (He may have to go back onto the C-PAP Prose ventilator to help clear his lungs.) He opened his eyes and studied us intently. His bodily functions are working well, as he filled his britches while G-pa was holding him. Nurse Stacy got the pleasure of cleaning him up just prior to our departing. (Dr Yoder and his staff did their rounds while we were there and spoke about the MRI that they needed to schedule soon, and also mentioned that they would take the Cook catheter out this afternoon.)

2:15 PM, we just got word back from Shaun and Alicia, as they are currently at the NICU, and they stated that they had just finished removing the Cook catheter—(this is great news!!!).

Caleb had a Merry Christmas. He had a couple of Christmas wishes come true the biggest was the removal of the C-Pap machine along with a couple of other machines, he is now down to just a few IV's, Oxygen, and feeding tubes. The Nurses were also able to dress him for the first time and continue to rave about the great progress that he has shown. We still continue to be in awe how our Heavenly Father has blessed us and this sweet little boy so abundantly. We sincerely hope that you all had a Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year!

We got to see Caleb open his eyes for quite a bit on Christmas Eve. He is being weened off his medications and is becoming more and more alert every day.

However one thing he did not like was the C-Pap breather he was hooked up to. The nurses kept telling us he tried to pull it out.

Merry Christmas baby Caleb! Caleb has continued to progress so much even in the past couple of days, as of the night of the 23rd the Doctors and Nurses felt confident enought to remove the ventilator and use a machine called a C-Pap. Caleb has done very well and not had to go back on the ventilator. Yesterday Caleb's Mom and Dad received the best Christmas present they could ever ask for, they were able to hold Caleb for about twenty minutes each. Nurses have reported that as they have continually brought Caleb out of sedation he has continually became more feisty trying to pull out tubes, remove masks and so on. He is starting to open his eyes more and more and becoming aware of his surroundings, all of his Nurses tell us that he stays up most of the night ( Shaun definatly passed on that behavior). We would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Once again words cannot express how much we appreciate everyone and what you have done for us.

How blessed we are! That is by far one of the first thoughts that comes to mind as we look at all the progress made by baby Caleb in just one week. Yesterday was yet another great day for Caleb. Doctors have now tapered him off several medications including a blood pressure medication and a sedation medication, he has responded well to all. A couple of days ago they switched his ventilator to one that better simulates his normal breathing, after checking his lungs and using the new ventilator Doctors felt it was time to start tapering off his oxygen, he is also responding well to this they just need to get him awake enough to have his brain start telling his lungs to function. Everyday it seems as though they remove a couple of more machines, taper off a medication or just push him in general to complete a task that he has not completed before and every day he responds with the utmost positive results. Everyday this little guy never ceases to amaze us with his strength and determination. It just validates the quote from E.T. Sullivan quoted by President Hinkley in the December issue of the Ensign magazine, "When God wants a great work done in the world or a great wrong righted, he goes about it in a very unusual way. He doesn't stir up his earthquakes or send forth thunderbolts. Instead, he has a helpless baby born." It is amazing what this little guy has taught us in the short time he has been on this earth. We once again want to thank you all for everything all of you have done and will continue to do.

They changed Caleb's ventilator to a new ventilator that simulates more of a natural breathing pattern. This will also will help strengthen his lungs and begin to teach him to breathe on his own.

Once again another night of miracles! Caleb was taken off the ECMO machine a couple of days ago and doing very well. With him doing so well Doctors and Nurses decided that yesterday they would continue to taper him off some of his medications and also attempt to feed him milk for the first time. On a couple of different occasions last night they fed him milk in which he did great, so great that they increased his intake on his second feeding. They are also continuing to do EKG's on a daily basis which continue to come back very positive, along with a lot of other testing. Once again we cannot say it enough, how thankful we are to our Heavenly Father for all the miracles that have accompanied little Caleb through this process. We are also very thankful and in awe every single day of all the wonderful people that have done so much for us. Thank You all you will never know how much it means to us.

We want to first start this morning by saying we want to thank each and everyone of you for your thoughts and prayers, we know that Caleb has progressed so fast due to his strong will and the prayers of everyone. Last night was a very positive night, Caleb continues to simply amaze us with how much defiance this little boy has. He is doing very well without the ECMO machine so well that they have already started to taper down is oxygen and some of his other machines which we did not expect to happen near this soon. The Doctor's and Nurses still continue to give very positive news and once again we know a large part of this is due to all of you. Thanks to everyone.

This picture of Caleb was taken right after they finished the surgery to remove the ECMO catheters. We're so grateful he was able to come off the machine today.

Today they also added his "Cook iv" in the same artery his ECMO tubes came out of - That's the white tubing you see across his chest entering his neck.

After a good night Caleb's Nurses and Doctors decided that it was time to start tapering him off the ECMO machine, as of 1:30 this afternoon he was doing very well without the machine. They have also taken another EKG of his heart, after he was taken off the machine and everything looked very good and was functioning as it should. Once again we reiterate that we are so thankful to our Heavenly Father for blessing us so abundantly, along with that we cannot thank everyone enough for all the love that has been shown to us and our family.

Caleb had another good night last night, he is starting to become more active and not really liking all of the tubes and machines that are hooked to his little body. The Nurses said that they were possibly looking at tapering down the ECMO machine last night, however Caleb thought he wanted to be a little more active thus causing his blood pressure to fluctuate a little bit, but the doctors did not seem to be to concerned about the fluctuation. Thanks once again to all of you for everything that you have done and all that you will continue to do in the future.
